Shipment volume of the global motherboard industry hit about 27.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2016, down at a whopping 13.6% compared to the previous quarter, according to Taipei-based IT research institute MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute). "This was attributed mainly to two factors: the pull-in demand of brands for high-end motherboards was reduced during the transition period between new and old motherboards and the inventory clearance of brands towards year-end," says Claire Line, industry analyst with MIC.

"On top of that, motherboard brands were counting on the new rollout of Intel's latest CPU, dubbed Kaby Lake to boost their shipments in the first quarter of 2017. But we found the effect did not happen in January. Instead, they start to give hopes on Ryzen, AMD's next-generation CPU to be released in March 2017."
