Taiwan-based GCS and Intelligent Epitaxy Technology Getting Ready for 5G
August 04, 2017

In anticipation of the commercialization of 5G networks in 2020, Taiwanese pure-play compound semiconductor wafer foundry providers such as LandMark Optoelectronics and GCS (Global Communication Semiconductor) and the suppliers of InP (Indium Phosphide) and GaAS (Gallium Arsenide) such as Intelligent Epitaxy Technology and Win Semiconductors are poised to tap 5G opportunities, Taiwan's Economic Daily News recently reported. GCS is expected to begin 5G-enabled base station shipments sometime this year. Intelligent Epitaxy Technology and IQE are the only two companies in the world dedicated to producing MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) for 5G applications. The company is to complete the new factory in August that is capable of installing 16 MBE machines in total. Upon the installation completion of 6 machines, the plant will increase production capacity by 60%, and double by mid-2018.
